For babies, the clothes must not only be pretty, they must also be practical. That’s why even knitted clothes are ideal for the little worms. Knitting baby trousers is therefore an absolute must for knitters.

Baby trousers knitted from soft and fluffy wool, are eye-catcher and warming nest at the same time. They keep your belly and back warm and don’t cut the little baby anywhere. Another aspect of a self-knitted baby pant is that it grows with you.

We have compiled a free guide for beginners for our baby pants, which is easy to rework without special knitting skills.

Material and preparation
The most important task of baby pants is that they warm the little babies well. That’s why it’s important to make sure that the yarn is good. Special baby wool is noticeably softer and more fluffy than conventional wool. It can be made of natural fibres or synthetic fibres. A Baby Soft Merino wool is suitable for winter, special baby cotton yarns are suitable for summer temperatures.

We have chosen a yarn for these baby pants that is similar to the wool Siena from Wolle Rödel. Siena is a high-quality and extra-fine merino wool. It has a barrel length of 135 m / 50 g and is available in many soft and strong colours.
We have knitted with a needle size of 3, although it is recommended with a thickness of up to 4 mm.

If you prefer a super-soft blend of polyacrylic and polyamide, the Rico Baby Classic yarn from Wolle Rödel is the perfect choice. It is also knitted with a needle size of 3.

According to our instructions, you need 0 – 3 months for a baby trouser size:

100 grams wool
1 needle play 3 mm thick
1 needle play 3.5 mm thick or 2 circular knitting needles 3 mm and 3.5 mm thick, maximum rope length 40 cm
centimeter measure
darning needle
Basic design – Half patent
For the cuffs we have chosen the half patent pattern. It is very elastic and very comfortable to wear.

The body and legs of these baby trousers are knitted only on the right side.

Mesh stop with an even number of stitches. The half patent pattern in rounds consists of 2 rounds.

Tip: You can hang a stitch marker in front of the first stitch so that you always recognize the beginning of the round immediately.

1st round

This is only the basic series.

1 stitch right
1 mesh left
1 stitch right
1 mesh left
Round 2

1 envelope
1 take off stitch right (i.e. the right stitch has an envelope), the envelope is in front of the right stitch
1 stitch left knit
1 envelope
1 take off right stitch
1 stitch left knit
shortened:

1 take off right stitch with envelope
1 Ma left
1 right stitch with envelope lift off
1 Ma left
Knit the whole round in this order.
3rd round

Knit the right stitch with the yo on the right.
Knit the left stitch to the left
1 stitch with cover right
1 mesh left
1 stitch with cover right
1 mesh left
Work the entire round until the beginning of the round in this order. Work the 2nd and 3rd rounds continuously.

Knit baby pants: size 0 – 3 months
waistband
stop

Cast on 88 meshes with 3 mm needle size
Close the round.
In the 1st round alternately: 1 Ma right, 1 Ma left, 1 Ma right, 1 Ma left
Start from the 2nd round with the half patent pattern in rounds. The stop can be knitted directly onto the short circular needle or onto a needle play.

Tip: Stop on a needle play: First stop all stitches on a long needle or a circular knitting needle.

From the 1st round onwards, the stitches are then knitted onto the four needles. Before closing the round, please make sure that the needles do not twist. Simply place on the table and sort. Now close the round.

So that there is a nice transition when closing the round, you can immediately knit a few stitches (2-4) from the 1st needle onto the 4th needle (i.e. the last one).
These stitches, which are then too much, are simply put back on the 1st needle after 4 rounds. Knit 3 centimetres in cuff pattern. If you like, you can knit a row of holes for a cord after these first 3 centimetres. But it doesn’t have to be.

Hole line 1st round

It starts at needle number one:

1 Envelope
1 stitch right
1 mesh left
2 knit stitches together
1 envelope
1 stitch right
1 mesh left
2 knit stitches together
Finish the round in this episode.

Line of holes 2nd round

Knit all the stitches as they appear. Lift off the right stitches created by the knitting with an envelope on the right. Knit the cover of the preliminary round as a left stitch. This will make the hole for the cord. Knit the left stitches as normal on the left.

After the two rows of hole patterns, all the stitches are now again on top of each other as usual in the half patent. Another 3 centimetres are knitted for the cuff in the half patent. The cuff now has 6.5 centimetres.

womb
After the cuff the body of the baby trousers is knitted. Change the needles. Continue knitting with a needle size of 3.5. Simply knit each needle with the new needle size so that it is automatically replaced after one round.

1st round

Increase 2 meshes on each needle. You can increase these stitches freely. We have doubled the 2nd stitch and the penultimate stitch on each needle.

Tip for stitch increase: Raise the intermediate thread of the preliminary round and place it on the left needle. Then knit off right interlaced. For this purpose, the stitch is stitched in from behind and knitted off.

After the increase the round counts 96 meshes. Knit these 96 stitches 14 centimetres high. Always only right stitches. With the cuff, the trousers have a length of 20 centimetres so far.

crotch gusset
So that the diaper has enough space and the baby trousers fit comfortably, we knit a small gusset into it without any complications. For this crotch gusset you define the front and back centre. To make the work easier, simply place 3 stitches from the second needle onto the first needle. Do the same with needles 3 and 4.

Now set two stitch markers so that 1 stitch each of needle 1 and 2 shows the middle of the needle. The same applies to needle 3 and 4. In addition to these 2 stitches, we will now increase the number of stitches.

Increase: Now increase one stitch next to the middle stitches on the right and left in every 2nd round.

1st round

In addition to the middle two stitches (from needle 1 and 2), increase 1 stitch to the right and left. The gusset now counts 4 stitches.

Round 2

no increase

3rd round

to the right and to the left of the 4 gusset meshes increase 1 mesh each = 6 meshes

Round 4

no increase

Round 5

again next to the 6 gusset stitches right and left increase 1 stitch = 8 stitches.

Round 6

no increase

Continue working until the gusset counts 12 meshes. Always increase one round and knit the next round without increasing.

In the round after the last increase, the middle 10 stitches of the crotch gusset are chained off.

There should now be 22 stitches on each needle. This means that 1 leg has 44 meshes circumference. The legs are now worked separately. To do this, place the stitches of one leg on a long circular needle or a very long safety needle.

Distribute the remaining meshes of the other leg over the needle play. There are 11 stitches on each needle. So that the transition in the crotch gusset can be knitted cleanly, simply place 4 stitches again on the first needle before the crotch. After a few rounds you can put it back so that each needle has the same number of stitches again.

The legs are knitted straight up to a length of 9 centimetres.

For the leg cuff, remove 2 stitches per needle. In the same way as you did after the waistband. Always knit two stitches together on the right. There are now 9 stitches on each needle. Then continue working the next 2 centimetres in the half patent.

Cast off all stitches.

For the second leg of the baby trousers take up all the stitches on the needle play and work this leg exactly like the first leg.

Sew crotch gusset together
Now only the open gusset has to be sewn together at the crotch.

Sew all working threads. If you have decided on a cord, pull it through the hole pattern. The baby trousers are ready in size 0 – 3 months.

size chart
This size chart for baby trousers can only be an approximate guideline. Not every baby is the same. Although knitted baby pants may still be too big today, they are guaranteed to grow in quickly. And a second, smaller pair of trousers is knitted fast.
